On 21 June 2026, following the national election, the Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics formed a committee headed by the Director of the Demography and Health Wing to prepare recommendations for ensuring the preparation and publication of quality statistics. Under its Terms of Reference, the committee was tasked with identifying the implementable recommendations of the BBS Reform Taskforce, preparing an item-wise course of action, and formulating a time-bound action plan. It may be noted that, on 20 October 2025, it was reported that the interim government had formed a four-member committee to prepare a roadmap for implementing the recommendations of the taskforce on strengthening Bangladesh’s statistical system. The committee was asked to submit its recommendations within two months.
Observation
-
The committee formed by BBS will need to recommend the way forward for implementing the Taskforce recommendations. Following internal review and approval by BBS, the committee’s recommendations are likely to be forwarded to the Statistics and Informatics Division for further action.
It may be noted that the original proposal recommended a Recommendation Implementation Task Team chaired by the Planning Adviser, with the SID Secretary and the head of the NSO serving as ex-officio members, along with two or more independent members selected by the Planning Adviser. The proposed Task Team was also expected to be convened within a fortnight or one month of the submission of the Taskforce report and to prioritise a short- and medium-term action plan for implementing the recommendations. The committee formed by BBS differs from this proposed composition and institutional arrangement.
