Reform Initiated
Last Update: 02-May-26
On 23 October 2025, the interim government approved the draft Bangladesh Labour Act (Amendment) Ordinance, 2025, aimed at expanding worker protections, strengthening gender equality and aligning national labour standards with ILO obligations. Following the approval, the draft was expected to be sent to the President for promulgation as an ordinance.
Legal and Policy Framework
Last Update: 02-May-26
The Bangladesh Labour Amendment Ordinance, 2025 changed the term “Mohilla” to “Nari.” This provision was incorporated without any change in the Bangladesh Labour (Amendment) Act, 2026. In the Bangladesh Labour (Amendment) Act, 2026, the term “Mohilla” has been replaced with “Nari.”
Observation
-
The legal change in this context does very little to uphold the spirit of this reform proposal. Executive directives and adequate administrative support will be required to ensure that the power-centric language and informal addresses are avoided in workplaces and to ensure use of Bangla in all judicial bodies related to labour.
