Reform Initiated
Last Update: 25-Oct-26
On 16 October 2024, the interim government reportedly stated that it was preparing a comprehensive statistics policy aimed at strengthening the credibility and independence of official statistics. In September 2026, a further draft of the Data and Microdata Dissemination and Access Policy 2026 was published for stakeholder comments, expanding the dissemination framework to cover microdata access, secure research facilities, user-support mechanisms and an annual Advance Release Calendar. Stakeholder consultations continued in September, and on 7 October 2026, SID issued a notice for an inter-ministerial meeting to finalise the draft policy.
Legal and Policy Framework
Last Update: 25-Oct-26
On 8 May 2025, the Statistics and Informatics Division (SID) published the draft Data Dissemination Policy 2025 and Statistical Compilation, Publication and Preservation Policy 2025 following their approval by the Planning Adviser. Subsequently, on 9 February 2026, SID formally issued the updated Data Dissemination Policy, 2026 under Section 16 of the Statistics Act, 2013, establishing the formal policy framework governing the release and dissemination of official statistics.
Observation
-
The dissemination framework is also being revised again through the draft Data and Microdata Dissemination and Access Policy, 2026, which proposes greater independent publication authority for the Director General/Chief Statistician. On 7 October 2026, the Statistics and Informatics Division issued an official notice for an inter-ministerial meeting to finalise the draft policy, indicating that the revised framework was still undergoing formal policy finalisation at that stage. Consequently, the proposed expansion of the Chief Statistician’s authority had not yet become part of the operative policy framework.
