In the FY2026–27 Annual Development Programme, several statistical initiatives related to the Taskforce recommendation were included in the list of unapproved new projects without allocation. These include a proposed Labour Force and Child Labour Statistics Project for January 2026–December 2029, with an estimated government cost of Tk 4,998.52 lakh; a Price and Wage Index Compilation Framework Development Project for July 2026–June 2029, estimated at Tk 3,650 lakh; and a Sample Vital Surveillance System Project for January 2026–June 2031, estimated at Tk 45,000 lakh.
Observation
-
The ADP projects related to the Labour Force Survey, Sample Vital Surveillance System, and price and wage statistics are yet to be approved. Some of these projects were planned to start in 2026. However, it appears that the approval process is lagging. The unavailability of these key projects limits the government's ability to track progress in key economic and development areas. As a result, it will also negatively affect the government's policymaking process. The idea of having core surveys is to help the government with key insights in these areas so that the government can devise appropriate policies in a timely manner.
It may be noted that the taskforce proposal identified 12 core statistical activities: the Population Census, Agriculture Census, Economic Census, National Income Accounting, Household Income and Expenditure Survey, Labour Force Survey, Sample Vital Registration System, Survey of Manufacturing Industries, Survey of Service Industries, Agricultural Crop Surveys, Consumer Price Index, and National Climate Change Impact and Disaster-related Statistics. The proposal specifies that these surveys should be financed from the revenue budget.
The proposal also called for the immediate preparation of a Tk 50 crore DPP to finance the annual implementation of the Sample Vital Registration System, Labour Force Survey, Agricultural Crop Surveys, and Price and Wage Surveys, with separate budgetary allocations to be prepared for the remaining surveys. It also recommended regularly preparing separate reports on cross-cutting issues, including gender and urbanisation, drawing on data from multiple surveys. However, the interim government took no measures to this end.
