This pledge was included in the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP)’s election manifesto for Bangladesh’s 13th national election. The pledge states that "Large employment opportunities will be created by encouraging talented young people to join teaching in all subjects, including mathematics, science, third language, sports, culture, IT, and technical fields. The economic and social status of all existing cadre and non-cadre teachers will be increased gradually."

On 17 March 2026, recruitment reportedly started for 18 sports teachers, with three teachers for each of six sports at the upazila level. On 29 March, NTRCA published an e-requisition notice to collect vacancy data for MPO-listed schools and colleges, where 60,295 teacher posts were reported vacant. On 23 April 2026, the Education Minister informed Parliament that the government had initiated the recruitment process for 2,842 vacant assistant-teacher posts in government secondary schools.
On 26 April 2026, the State Minister for Primary and Mass Education said that recruiting qualified and competent primary teachers was receiving the government’s highest priority and that the ongoing assistant-teacher recruitment process was progressing under the relevant rules. By 28 June, a requisition had been sent to the Public Service Commission seeking recommendations for recruitment against 2,204 vacant teaching posts in technical education. On 2 September 2026, the State Minister further announced plans to recruit more than 30,000 assistant teachers for government primary schools within the following year.

The National Pay Scale 2026 was approved by the cabinet on 31 August 2026, with implementation effective from 1 July 2026. On 1 September 2026, it was reported that teachers and employees of MPO-listed non-government educational institutions would also receive benefits under the new pay structure.
Observation

The introduction of new subjects such as third language, sports, culture, technical education and technology-related areas is likely to create demand for specialised teachers beyond the existing workforce. Meeting this demand may require new sanctioned posts, clear recruitment criteria, adjustments to existing recruitment procedures and additional budgetary support. While teacher recruitment is a regular process, it may be noted that the current government has announced and initiated recruitment across primary, secondary, MPO-listed and technical education. The National Pay Scale 2026 is expected to improve the financial benefits of teachers, including those in MPO-listed institutions, while policymakers have also indicated that teachers’ pay, and professional status require further improvement. More clarity on how specialised teaching positions will be created and filled would help assess progress against the pledge more fully.
